First off, let me just say one thing: this book is hysterical. I was reading this while I was traveling and could not contain my laughter on an airplane and a train. Yes, I was the crazy lady laughing out loud to herself. And I loved every second of it.

american housewifeAmerican Housewife is a slim yet mighty collection of twelve short stories each documenting the comically dark world of domestic living. Each story is filled with fervent commentary on modern day womanhood and feminism while at the same time disseminating playful, and entertaining stories with wild characters.

Some of my favorite stories involved a rigged reality television show, a haunted apartment, a child pageant queen trying to escape her life, an expert bra fitter, and a book club with very special requirements. I also loved some of the shorter stories trickled throughout the book that feature advice and musings on how to be a classy lady. My favorite of these is titled ‘Take it From Cats’ – a hilarious introspection on how we can look to cats for inspiration in everyday life.

This book is a must read for anyone looking to laugh and enjoy themselves. Fans of both contemporary women’s fiction as well as modern day humor titles will love the characters and the bizarre happenstance of their lives. Pair this book with a giant glass of Pinot Noir or anything sparkling and get ready to cheer on these ladies and takes notes for your own life.
