Kobo eReader

Our Support Team filled me in on the preliminary testing results for the Kobo eReader and it appears to be good news. The Kobo eReader, available in Canada and the United States, is compatible with Adobe EPUB and PDF eBooks downloaded from the library. Our Support Team will be completing their full round of testing soon, and once they’re done, I’ll snatch it away from them and post a full review of the device.

Although the Kobo eReader is compatible with the service, there are a couple things you need to be aware of before running to the nearest Borders store, for US residents, or Chapters, for Canadian residents:

• If you attempt to open an expired EPUB eBook, you receive a message indicating that the file cannot be opened.
• If you attempt to open an expired PDF eBook, the PDF will close without any messaging.

Be on the lookout for my full review on the Kobo eReader next month.

Check out the full list of compatible eBook readers on the Device Resource Center.

Find eBooks from the library on OverDrive Search.

Wonderful news! Please don’t forget to update the "compatible devices" page. Our librarians rely on that as gospel.

You should also make sure libraries know that their pdf books will show up under "Documents" rather than "Books".

EPUBs from Overdrive aren’t scaling properly either, but that is supposed to be fixed with the June 28 software update.

I just got an ebook from the library, and already my Kobo says “ebook file expired”, yet I still have it for another 3 weeks. What’s up with that?

I am having the same issue with the notice that the ebook file has expired. Won’t open. Just downloaded from the library.

We just ran into the same ‘ebook file expired!’ error here at the library. Check the Date/Time settings. The default time stamp on our ER701 seems to be for the year 2020. If you change the time, date & time zone to match your computer’s settings you should be able to open & read the book once it’s been transferred. Good luck!
