With the role of libraries shifting from book and media lending institutions to “access points” for content and information, OverDrive, as a digital distributor, similarly has been broadening its scope in licensing materials from publishers and content providers.

We recently announced a relationship with Disney Publishing Worldwide to provide access for our library partners and their patrons to the Disney Digital Books subscription service. Disney Digital Books is a collection of more than 600 read-along digital books featuring beloved Disney characters.

This is the first of several similar agreements you can expect in the coming months. Unlike the current available catalog of digital content, OverDrive will not be hosting the content files, but will instead be the portal through which libraries and their patrons can access an existing ecosystem of premium content.

For all non-hosted content, we manage the authentication of the library users through our existing system. Similarly, OverDrive library partners add paid subscriptions using our existing collection development portal, Content Reserve. You should still expect the high level of integration with OverDrive’s existing patron checkout experience that is a hallmark of OverDrive’s library service (no plain old referral URLs).

We are excited about the opportunities this development presents for our libraries and their patrons. Do you have a premium web-based service you think would be a good fit for our library customers?  Contact us with details.
