The digital media industry has recently been abuzz with talk of new markets crossing the chasm of the digital frontier and embracing eBooks. Some recent news stories have even highlighted the emerging markets in Africa and China, as well as new retail outlets like Taiwan’s TAAZE.

Did you know OverDrive supports the UTF-8 character set allowing catalog information for eBook content in more than 30 languages? Including double-byte languages such as Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese (aka CJKT), and other non-US-ASCII languages like Russian, Greek, Hebrew, Armenian and Arabic?

To maximize your reach to native speaking audiences we encourage you to supply metadata in the language of your content. This can include enhanced metadata elements such as text excerpts and professional reviews to assist with the marketing of your content.

OverDrive’s admin portal, Content Reserve, supports native language metadata in the following fields:

  • Title
  • Subtitle
  • Edition
  • Series
  • Creator / Author
  • Publisher
  • Imprint
  • Description
  • Reviews
  • Text Excerpt
  • Creator / Author Biography

Distribution through OverDrive reaches a global audience as we partner with thousands of libraries and retailers around the world. We are also regularly establishing new partnerships expanding revenue opportunities for our supplier partners’ content, with new channels in Malaysia, Turkey, South Africa , and Indonesia.

If you aren’t currently making your non-English content available, or have separate divisions handling distribution of the content, please consider adding the titles to your Content Reserve account to generate additional revenue streams.

If you are an existing supplier with questions on submitting metadata in a language other than English please contact our Publisher Relations Team for assistance.
