Last week, Willie Eaton and I participated in the 2010 Ohio Library Council Convention & Expo. This year’s theme, “Strike it Rich”, was quite fitting as last year’s annual expo was canceled in lieu of Ohio libraries’ budget cuts. Having attended OLC’s Expo two previous times, there was certainly a new energy this year; an excitement of being back in the swing of things.

With hundreds of library partners in our home state of Ohio, we were delighted to reconnect with our friends and share what’s new and coming soon for their eBooks and digital audiobooks service. As expected, eBooks and eBook readers were a hot topic, especially given the 170% growth in eBook circulation our library network has witnessed in the last year.

However, OverDrive Advantage 2.0, a program that allows member libraries of a consortium to build a custom collection within a shared collection, topped the discussion. Many Ohio libraries that participate in a consortium are looking for ways to fill patron demand on popular titles, and Advantage allows the purchase of additional copies or unique titles/subjects, reserved specifically for that library’s patrons.

Thanks to all who visited the OverDrive exhibit and attended my Vendor Demonstration. I look forward to seeing you again next year!

Shannon Lichty is the partner services manager for OverDrive.
