Today, we released OverDrive Media Console for iPhone/iPad v2.2, which optimizes the experience on the Apple tablet. Whether users are reading an EPUB eBook, listening to an MP3 audiobook, or browsing the OverDrive Media Console library, they’ll now have the full iPad screen utilized for their enjoyment. Additionally, the app for iOS devices—including iPhone and iPod touch—now supports landscape and portrait orientation, and a new calendar icon displays the number of days left until the title expires.

To reflect iPad support, we’ve updated the graphics and help pages on your ‘Virtual Branch’ and uploaded a new eBook Devices Cheat Sheet for you to distribute to staff and customers.

The free app is available in the App Store, and can be installed on Apple devices running iOS v4.0 (or newer). Users with OverDrive Media Console already installed will be notified that an update is available.

    Keeping the older iPod version. It displays with much larger font, which I have come to love! Even the larger font on the iPad app is not as comfortable to view for extended periods of time.

    Bluefire will work with both EPUB and PDF where the OverDrive app currently only does EPUB and MP3. The OverDrive app also allows you to download directly from the web browser on your iPad to the OverDrive reading app. Whereas Bluefire requires you to download to your computer first using Adobe Digital Editions and then transfer via USB and iTunes to your iPad. So if you mainly like the OverDrive library EPUBS, it’s worth a try.

    I’ve got some iPad comments of my own. First, thanks for the iPad version. Second, now that OverDrive has the basic functionality down, are you working on feature enhancements such as being able to select from different font’s, change background color, change margins, etc.?

    I would also love to see an option to highlight passages, annotate, and then export those passages and annotations to a text or RTF file. Sony Reader Library software can export annotations and highlighting to RTF files. Hopefully the publisher restrictions on the library loan ebooks wouldn’t preclude such an OverDrive feature for limited amounts of text highlighting and annotation.

    What are the plans for adding an option to the mobile site to limit to available titles, and perhaps a link to a library’s full site? The iPad screen can comfortably display the full web site, and then patrons would have access to changing the checkout period, and limiting to available titles. They could also checkout titles that aren’t compatible with their mobile device for download later to a computer. Thank you.

    It is a giant step in the right direction. Has anyone figured out how to interrupt an MP3 download — then resume it again? How is ADE still involved? Is an “Advanced” search option forthcoming? Thanks.

    Great to be able to download directly instead of via iTunes/Bluefire!

    A big improvement would be the ability to limit searches to ONLY available titles which can be checked out immediately. Similar to what can be done on the website’s Advanced Search page.

    I’m finding the mobile interface for the Library 2 Go site very awkward – I mostly borrow the ‘always available’ and there’s no way to limit or even do an advanced search for those. I’d prefer to use the regular browser version of the site – is there a way to get around the spawning of the mobile app? Thanks

    Yes! That has happened to me a couple of times in the last week. Not sure what the problem is, but it’s really hard to help a patron download a title and then tell them that you don’t know why it has downloaded to their device.

    I can’t tell you how important it is to either allow iPad users to view the full site, or, even better, add the “limit to available items” feature to the mobile site. Our patrons have to scroll through 20+ pages to find a title to check out, and many of them give up far before then. PLEASE change this!

    @Renee Great question. The mobile site uses the default lending period set in your account. You can change it on a computer by visiting your ‘Virtual Branch,’ clicking on ‘My Digital Account,’ and then on ‘Lending Periods.’ Just adjust the lending periods for either ‘Adobe EPUB eBook’ or ‘OverDrive MP3 Audiobook,’ and the next time you access the collection on a mobile device, it will recognize your new default.

    Disappointed with changes. Now from ipad can only see mp3 & ePub formats @ the local digital public library. The much more extensive collection of audiobooks in WMA formats available can only be viewed from PC. Previously, much more conveniently, could see all formats (WMA, mp3, & ePub) on iPad & then download WMA from PC & transfer over to mobiles. Love using Overdrive & hope will be changed back.

    I must agree with the many comments asking for a “limit to available titles” checkbox on the “Browse” function. It’s there for “Search” (which would only bring up certain titles anyway), but not, say, browsing for all “Mystery.” Instead, what patrons must do is scroll, and scroll, and scroll, and scroll endlessly for available titles. It gets rather annoying. Please fix this so it’s more like the website with the delimiter options. Thanks!

    I am trying to download a book from the library, which I have been doing on my ipad for a year with Overdrive. But I keep getting an error message, adobe activation request error:2004. Is there a problem ?

      Hello Ann. Please make sure your lock rotation is not checked under settings on your iPad. If this option is not checked, the screen should automatically change when the device is turned. If you continue having issues, please email support@overdrive.com. Thanks, Brianne

    I have an IPAD2. I downloaded and listened to 5 books and deleted them. But when I want to get another it says I have exceeded my 5 books and doesnt realize I returned them. Can you help me?

      Hi Mary, at this time audiobooks cannot be returned early. So those that you have deleted are still actually checked out to your card. Sorry for the inconvenience. OverDrive is working to improve the situation, so please check back for updates. -Brianne

    I installed the new update and started having a problem when I “turn” a page or reach the end of a chapter. the new page won’t load , though it seems to be trying to do so. I also cannot cancel off of the screen–I have to turn the ipad off and restart it to fix it. this has happened numerous times. I tried uninstalling the software and reinstalling with the same result. I had used the software bafore the upgrade for 6 months with no problems. any ideas??

    I read that you can use your adobe overdrive username/password on up to 6 devices and I am no where near that but when I tried to log in on my iPhone I get an error 2004 About too many activations. Could it have been caused because when I downloaded overdrive on my iPad I was having some library issues and had to delete and reinstall overdrive a few times on my iPad.

    how can I fix this?

    I usually swap between reading my books on my iPhone and my iPad. With Kindle app and iTunes app, my books sync so that no matter which device I am on my book is on the current page I am reading. I have recently started using Overdrive for my library books and can’t figure out how to sync them with this app. Is there a way to do this?
