The wait for Canadians who love the classics is finally over! More than 23,000 eBook titles are now available for free (free!) through Project Gutenberg. Canadian libraries powered by OverDrive can access these public domain titles, and best of all, they are always available for simultaneous use by customers.

The timeless stories can be enjoyed on any compatible EPUB eBook reader, computer or mobile device. Memorable titles, such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter and Changeling and Other Stories by Donn Byrne, plus Canadian-specific titles like A History of the Canadian Pacific Railway by Harold Adams Innis, are available.

For users, the Project Gutenberg collection will expand and improve ‘Virtual Branch’ websites by making tens of thousands of EPUB eBooks immediately available without waitlists or holds. Users can always find favorite eBook titles to download from the library. Also, eBooks downloaded from the Project Gutenberg collection don’t expire or count against their checkout limit.  That said, they do count toward library circulation. Plus, you can find unique Project Gutenberg reports in Content Reserve.

To get started adding these free, public domain titles to your digital collection, contact your OverDrive Account Specialist today!

Great news!! I think Canadian Libraries will love this – it will give all our library patrons something to check out when they are waiting for some of the more popular titles.
